Project 1 : Architectural Allotment

Students are to design an Architectural Allotment, meant to serve as a small garden structure to grow plants. In a space of 3m x 6m x 3m (height), students are to propose the space and system (hanging, climbing, hydroponic etc.) for growing plants (no less than 60% of the total area) with the integration of elements for seating (2-3 people), shelter (in the form of partial screens or roofs) and storage (for gardening tools, seeds, fertilizers etc.). The system for growing plants and the elements for seating, shelter and storage should be integrated and not be seen as separate parts of the allotment. The architectural elements of the allotment should be lightweight weatherproof and outdoor worthy

Reflection

Through this assignment, I've really learnt how to develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design, and also the method to develop my ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with materials and spaces. Other than that, I've also learnt how to develop understandings on human scale, proportion, ergonomics, and materiality. Through the project, I understood how to design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context (harness environmental qualities of the site to inform design) which impact on users’ experiences
